FUEL CONTAMINATION REMEDYCAN NET FARMERS £20M A YEAR
Adapting maritime technology to address fuel contamination within UK agriculture would save the sector upwards of £20m per year according to an expert who blames government-imposed biofuel inclusions as the main source of the current problem.
Peter Weide, technical director of Agri 16 – who manufacture a range of biocide products to both prevent and eradicate microbial contamination of fuel – believes farmers have taken the brunt of ill-considered policies that have severely impacted incomes.
“Rules that require increased proportions of fuels to be from renewable sources has directly led to clogged and blocked filters which causes difficulty starting, more stoppages and additional purchase of replacement parts. Many farmers to whom I have spoken feel Whitehall mandarins have devised directives without any practical understanding of the undesirable effects of modern bio-diesel and ultra-low sulphur diesel. And the situation is not helped by a lack of urgency in issuing improved fuel specifications,” says Mr Weide.
“Fortunately, technology exists to tackle the problem and farmers have a lot to gain by embracing it. We have devised four key products starting with Diesel Bug Killer – a broad-spectrum biocide formulation able to prevent and, where the problem is already established, eradicate the microbial contamination of fuel from yeasts and moulds, commonly referred to as Diesel Bug.
“Our top end product is Agri 16 Premium, incorporating a cetane improver to increase cetane number for easier starting and improved BHP. It prevents degradation of stored fuel and contains a biocide to prevent the growth of diesel bug. Other features include a lubricant – often lacking in ultra-low sulphur diesel – and a detergent coupled with dispersant for cleaner, easier starting. The two interim products– Diesel Injector and Enhancer – are based on similar science and have specific roles in the process,” he added.
Mr Weide went on to comment that technology has been tested and proven over many years in the maritime sector where the issue of fuel contamination – not least water – has been extremely well controlled. He stressed, however, that the technology has been modified with a stability improver to boost the natural antioxidant Vitamin E, making it product-specific to agriculture, which experiences higher incidents of filter plugging.
